Projects and Research Focus:

Currently I am Project Manager of the EXIST Forschungstransfer funded project DeCS Media. The goal of this project is to develop recording systems and software for depth image based 3D film production and display. If you are interested please contact me. The information on our project site gives a first impression of the approach and the results.

The project PITAS is a project which aims at the development of an integrated system for piracy detection and defense. My tasks were object detection on thermal- and color images and camera stabilization in software. Please find additional information about the project here:

Image DFG Project - Dynamisches 3D-Sehen, subproject 3D PoseMap: This project was set up to explore the possibilities of the newly developed Time-of-Flight-Cameras in combination with Computer Vision algorithms for Robot Navigation. Time-of-Flight cameras emit modulated light and measure the reflected light with a special sensor. From the phase shift between the emitted and reflected light the distance can be calculated. This makes real-time dense 3D-measurements possible.

In my work I concentrate on the calibration of such cameras, on model generation with these cameras and on the detection of moving objects. Further interesting issues are the usage for 3DTV, pose estimation with these cameras and motion reconstruction of articulated objects or free-form surfaces.

Image I was one of the researchers in the project "ARTESAS". Focus of the project was on Augmented Reality and See-Through Augmentation for industrial service applications. We presented the whole system on the CEBIT 2006 and gained lots of positive reactions. In a couple of years this system may actually be used in service applications. More details can be found here.

Image The "Helicopter" project was my Diploma Thesis which I realised at this institute under supervision of Jan Felix Woelk.
Goal of this project was an automatic camera steering which tracks an object and centers the camera view on this object solely based on image information. This was to be realised on board a miniature helicopter which was designed for aerial photography. Therefor a pan-tilt-unit was integrated in the helicopter together with a Firewire-camera and a small embedded PC. The tracking of objects was realised by a color histogram similarity measure which was combined with a particle filter. More details can be found here.

Software:

During my work for the project 3DPoseMap I developed the software "MIP-MultiCameraCalibration" which calibrates standard- and more important ToF-/PMD-cameras. This software is available to everyone and can be downloaded on the calibration page.
